Barcelona is the city of old mercantile traditions. It is also worth to mention, that Barcelona was one of the first industrialized town in Europe. Since late years of XVIII century it was known for textiles and corresponding machinery production, which till today is very important part of its economy. Barcelona became also one of the most famous fashion centers. In 2006 the town, for a first time, was hosting the most prestigious urban fashion fair - Bread & Butter. It turned out to be so succesful, that since then this is the only place where this fair take place.

As in many others modern towns, also in Barcelona part of the industry sector had been replaced by the dynamicly developing sector of services. Nevertheless the industry is still very important for economy of capital of Catalonia. The main are: textile, chemistry, pharmaceutical, polygraphy, electronic and motor. In the sector of services the most important are telecommunications, computer technologies, publishing and logistic.

In Barcelona are located few congress halls. The most famous is Fira de Barcelona (Trade Fair). In these halls majority of national and international events take place. The well developing are also hotel and tourist industries.

The very significant place in Barcelona is the town's Port - important for the transport of goods, as well as for a tourist ships.
